Organic products are huge these days, and a lot of people are spending quite a bit of money trying to stay “healthy.” But we believe there are a few things worth noticing first before you bet everything including the kitchen sink on organic foods.
The job of agencies, like the FDA, is to protect us from harmful chemicals, including herbicides and pesticides. But do you really think it’s possible? Think about it… to be sure that everything you buy at the grocery store is truly what the label says, these agencies would have a huge, nearly impossible task. They would have to keep up with every single farmer, every day of the year to ensure that the food is exactly what they say it is… organic and safe from toxins.
Let’s say, for giggles, that the FDA could actually accomplish this seemingly impractical task. The job still isn’t complete; they would then need to consider the water being used to water the crops. They’d have to ensure that the water is also free of harmful toxins, like chlorine, lead and fluoride.
Obviously we are skeptical of some of these huge farms that claim to be organic. Our garden is minuscule compared to some of these major farms and we’ve definitely had our share of pests. We’ve found natural ways to get rid of them, including companion planting and homemade sprays but we’ve still lost many of our crops to the pesky creatures. So imagine how difficult it is with large acreage farms that have a considerable amount of food to protect? Are they losing money on these crops, or finding other ways to ward off these pests? Hmmmm…food for thought (no pun intended).
We are in no way against farmers, but we do have to question how the FDA can truly regulate the industry. So yes, you error on the side of caution and buy organic. But know that the only way to be sure that the food you eat is truly organic is to grow it yourself.
